2014 promises some huge movie going experiences. From huge block busters to small foreign films it looks like a good year for film buffs. As per usual we all disagree on the best looking films of 2014 so we all picked 2 and threw them up. If you are smart you’ll skip down to mine (Bub) and see the two you should be most excited for!
- Jake’s Picks-
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (May 2nd, 2014)
I just watched The Amazing Spider-Man again and I definitely can’t wait till May 2nd, 2014. With the additions of Jamie Foxx (Electro), Paul Giamatti (The Rhino), and Dane DeHaan (Green Goblin) it’s looking like Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is going to have his hands full. Along with the buzz going on about the Sinister Six for the 3rd move, I’ll be there in full Spidey costume to scare the children.
The Hobbit: There and Back Again (July 18th, 2014)
You can’t stop grinning, your eyes are wide, and the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Sorry am I getting my movie joy confused with my orgasm again? Very few movies have this effect on me but every LOTR and the last two Hobbit movies have. There isn’t even a trailer yet but I’m all over this movie. I am fire…I AM DEATH…need I say more?

Rec 4: Apocalypse (October 10th, 2014)
Directors Paco Plaza and Jaume Balaguero came out with the original Rec back in 2007 and it is still the best found footage film out there. They even followed it up with a hell of a sequel in Rec 2. Rec 3: Genesis was probably the most disappointing movie of 2012, but I have hope for the final installment since it will be Balaguero back behind the helm. It helps having the gorgeous Manuela Velasco make her return too after Rec 3 was just about a side story. If they can produce a fitting end to the series, the Rec franchise could go down as one of the most well-made horror franchises of all time. Rec 4: Apocalypse comes out in its native Spain during the fall and will hopefully make it to the US soon after.
Killers ( February 6th, 2014)
When two killers from Japan and Indonesia post videos of their violent sprees online, the pair find one another on the Internet and begin a toxic and competitive duel. The premise sounds great to begin with, but when you add the guys behind Macabre and The Raid, you know Killers is going to be bloody and twisted. The initial teaser trailers for the film have already hit look as intense as promised. Killers makes its premiere at Sundance early in the year, but no official date of release has been determined yet.

X-Men: Days of Future’s Past (May 23rd, 2014)
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (May 23rd, 2014)
- Bub’s Picks-
The Raid 2: Berandal (March 28th, 2014)
Oculus (April 18th, 2014)
Mike Flanagan is not a household name. He doesn’t have many credits under his belt and I have only seen Absentia. Not a particularly great film, but it did linger in the back of my head for a few days after watching it. Why you ask am I including his follow-up film Oculus then? Not only is the festival buzz for this flick red-hot, but he also cast Karen Gillan (From Doctor Who) in the lead. A creepy haunted mirror movie starring The Doctor’s Companion. Here’s a blank check. Write any amount. I got to see this movie. No trailer for Oculus out yet, so here’s a clip of Karen looking all sorts of hot.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (April 4, 2014)
They were filming this movie throughout Washington, DC while I was living in Arlington, Virginia. That’s when the excitement for this movie started building. All you need to do is look at the source material and the talent behind this movie to be excited for this movie. The nerdy directing duo (The Russo Brothers), the return of Bucky (aka The Winter Soldier), more of Scarlet Johansson’s skin-tight costumes, and Robert FUCKING Redford. We will also be seeing a slew of new characters introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, like Batroc the Leaper, Crossbones, Falcon, and Sharon Carter. If that isn’t enough, just look at this amazing trailer.
Guardians of the Galaxy (August 1, 2014)
Star-Lord. Rocket Raccoon. Drax the Destroyer. Gamora. Groot. These aren’t the first names that c0me to mind when you’re thinking about Marvel Comics, but they will be come this August. Marvel Studios is about to take you on an epic space adventure that will be directed by none other than James Gunn. With a cast that consists of the most random actors ever compiled in a film (Michael Rooker, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, Benicio del Toro, and Karen Gillan), along with the voice talents of Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper, this movie is a sure fire hit. This movie is definitely a step in another direction for Marvel Studios, but if it does well, we can expect a flood of lesser known Marvel films down the line. What’s not exciting about that?
