SOUNDTRACK REVIEW: La Principessa Nuda (NSFW)

The great thing about the resurgence in vinyl is the fact that there are a handful of indie labels who strive to release bizarre and obscure music most thought were lost for eternity. German label Private Records is, in my opinion, not only at the forefront of bringing fans the bizarre and obscure, the quality of their releases is almost unparalleled. Their latest soundtrack release for the film LA PRINCIPESSA NUDA aka BLACK MAGIC is no exception.

The film was directed by Cesare Canevari (THE GESTAPO’S LAST ORGY) and starred both Tina Aumont and Ajita Wilson. The film was (believe it or not) loosely based on a true incident about a female ambassador who goes to Italy on business and befriends a female spy. She has a handful of enemies who are watching her every move in hopes of being able to discredit her with a sex scandal. The film is a product of the 70’s (1976 to be exact) and the music by Detto Mariano, Adriano Celentano, and Gianni Dall’Aglio is essential listening.

The two LP set comes in both black vinyl and clear vinyl is limited to 500 copies. There are forty re-mastered tracks never before released in any format. Genre wise, these songs are all over the board. There’s a mixture of funk, disco, and what can only be described as tribal chants/drums. Much of the music is instrumental and at times borders on being synth but is predominantly experimental and totally psychedelic. On LP one, you hear the music exactly as it appears in the film. On the second LP, you get the full extended versions of the same tunes. The clear vinyl is quite stunning and the packaging offers up some pretty steamy imagery on the back cover. Really, who doesn’t like looking at steamy imagery? It’s so easy to get lost in the music. This is the type of record you want to put on after a long day and just lose yourself in. This LP is bound to sell out real quick so I highly recommend grabbing yourself a copy as quick as you can. You’ll be kicking yourself later.
