The Red Star from the gifted mind of Christian Gossett was one of favorite comics when it was first introduced over at Image back in 2000. It was big, rich, and impressive. Unfortunately, as wants changed this was also about the period of time I drifted away from collecting.
But the series always stuck with me…that is why I’m pumped over this collection from IDW. I’m talking 302 pages of film on the page, fanboys and fangirls. The deluxe book collects issues 1-4 and 6-9 of the original series, plus tons, and tons of extras.
If you’re unfamiliar with this series, this is a perfect way to be introduced. “The Red Star” is a retrospective told by Maya Antares, a Sorceress-Lieutenant, in the Red Fleet. It’s set in the mythic post WWII Soviet Union where magic and technology mix. At the heart of the story is the relationship between Antares and her deceased husband, whom was lost in a never-ending war.
It’s really inspired stuff. Rumors of both Josh Trank and Jon Favreau having interest in bringing it to the big screen have surfaced in recent years, but there hasn’t been any movement. If done right, it could be something special.
So if you’ve got the extra $40 in your pocket this week drop it on this, you’ll thank me.
