Back in 2015, Wu Jing directed, co-wrote, and starred in the action film WOLF WARRIOR. What should have been a classic action bonanza, it turned out to be mediocre at best. Wu Jing had also cast in that particular film the amazing Scott Adkins and the idea of seeing these two go toe to toe was an action fans fantasy but for whatever reason, their altercations were far underwhelming and a huge disappointment. Two years later, Wu returns with the sequel and to be honest, I thought it looked alright but I was prepared to be let down in much the same way I was by the first film. I was so far wrong on this one, WOLF WARRIOR II may just be one of the best action films of the past several years.
After returning from the mission in the first film, Leng Feng (Wu Jing) and his comrades have brought the ashes of the their friend to give to his family. The family is in the middle of losing their home when he shows up and saves the day. He lets his anger get the better of him and lands himself in prison after ruthlessly attacking the land developer. Feng is discharged from the military and sent to prison for two years, when he’s released, he heads to Africa to work as security on a freighter who is delivering relief supplies. Once in Africa, the social climate is scary and rebel forces are trying to overthrow the government. Chinese immigrants have found themselves stuck in the middle of a civil war and lives are being lost. Feng realizes he will have to stand up for what he believes in and save the innocents caught in the crossfire. He’s alone, no help from the military, and the odds are stacked against him. He rescues Dr. Rachel Smith (Celina Jade) and a young girl who may hold the key to something very special but ruthless mercenary leader Big Daddy (Frank Grillo) has no intention in letting them live.
From the opening frames to the end credits, WOLF WARRIOR II is pure bliss, a near perfect action film. Wu returns in the same capacity as on the first film but this time he proves why he’s one of the best in the business. There’s a reason this film has become the highest grossing Chinese language film of all time and it’s well deserved. Wu Jing may have managed to help bring to life the best action film of 2017. Everything I disliked about the first film was thrown out, they started from scratch, and crafted a film full of emotion, pride, and of course top-notch action set pieces. There’s a little something for everyone, a brilliant car chase, exhilarating shootouts, and breathtaking martial arts. Some of the CGI blood didn’t really work but if that’s my only complaint then I think WOLF WARRIOR II is a certified masterpiece. It’s available today on DVD and Blu-Ray, get it now! This movie seriously kicks ass, action fans will love it.
