As you know, writers: Darrell E. Smith and Shawn P. Smith and artist Michael Aryn have launched a brand new horror Kickstarter and we couldn’t be happier to take a look at this blood-soaked Hotel…the Twilight Hotel to be exact and as a bonus, Darrell E. Smith has graced us with a Q&A session for all of us to die for…I’ll see my self out…oh there is also preview art too!
Q 01: WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?
A: I’m working on a new comic book series with my brother Shawn and one of our longtime associates, Ra X.
Q 02: WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
A: It’s a 4-volume horror comic book series about a haunted hotel named Twilight Hotel, which is also the name of the series. The hotel has a very dark history. It was built on land that was once the home of the most notorious plantation in all of North America, where thousands of African slaves and Seminole Indians were murdered in ritualistic ceremonies. It is also home to an ANCIENT EVIL DEITY named… “SHE”. With a supernatural ability to attract and influence people, she lures unwitting individuals to the Twilight where they are subjected to many horrible things including,
MAN-EATING BED BUGS, PSYCHOTIC GANGSTERS, ZOMBIES, SERIAL KILLERS and worst of all… themselves.
Q 03: HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA?
A: Well we, my brother and Ra, have always been big fans of The Twilight Zone and Tales from the Crypt, both the comic book and the HBO television series. And we’ve always wanted to do a project that was similar to them. At first, we were going to do it as our next film project, right after our last film, “RAGE”, but we, Shawn and I, had some important family matters to take care of. Both our mother and father has had serious health issues happen in the past few years so we postponed all projects until we could give them the time that is necessary to do them the right way.
Once we were ready to do the project, Ra had completed the screenplay, which was great but by that time American Horror Story’s, Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk were about to release their 5 th season, “Hotel” and we didn’t want people to think that we were ripping them off. Everyone that we would talk to about Twilight Hotel, they would say “Oh, it’s like American Horror Story” and we would say “No, it’s nothing like American Horror Story, and it’s not! Like I said, Twilight Hotel was inspired by our love for The Twilight Zone and Tales from the Crypt, it’s more like those shows and maybe more like Stephen King’s / Stanley Kubrick’s “THE SHINING” or Neil Gaiman’s “AMERICAN GODS”, but nothing like American Horror Story. I mean, it’s a hotel that has had many, many horrible things take place there, lots of deaths and the residue of those events, “the negative energy” of those events are still there, and the main antagonist of our story is an ancient, evil deity. To be serious, at the end of the day subtextually speaking, Twilight Hotel is a story about human beings, specifically Americans and our relationship with sex, race, and greed, which is at the root of almost all issues.
Q 04: WHAT WAS IT THAT YOU LOVED SO MUCH ABOUT “THE TWILIGHT
ZONE” AND “TALES FROM THE CRYPT”?
A: Everything! Both the show’s narrators were awesome but very different from each other. Rod Serling was this cool guy who smoked a cigarette while delivery these somewhat cryptic setups for the stories and the Crypt Keeper was a more, cheesy personality who always did these incredibly sophomoric puns before and after each show. Both series were first and foremost morality tales and the twist ending were often pretty awesome and surprising!
Q 05: WHAT WERE YOUR FAVORITE EPISODE OF “THE TWILIGHT ZONE”
AND “TALES FROM THE CRYPT”?
A: Oh wow! I can’t pick just one, there are so many to choose from but I’ll give you three each. From “Tales from the Crypt” … ummm, “And All Through the House”; “The Ventriloquists Dummy” and “Cutting Cards;.” There are many others but those are darn good. From the “Twilight Zone”, “To Serve Man”, “Eye of the Beholder” and “Talking Tina” with Telly Savalas, that one tripped me out the first time I saw it! I still hate baby dolls because of it.
A: It was called “RAGE”, it was a suspense-thriller / horror movie about a man who is pursued by this mysterious motorcyclist who is trying to kill him for unknown reasons. It was a low budget film that did pretty good. We made it for what most Hollywood movie spend on their catering budgets. It played in festivals all around the world, got tons of press and won several awards.
Q 07: I THINK I KNOW THE ANSWER BUT I’LL ASK IT ANYWAY. WHAT IS
YOUR FAVORITE HOLIDAY?
A: Valentine’s Day…, No, seriously. You know I’m just kidding. It’s HALLOWEEN! I’ve always loved Halloween, even when I was a little kid, I’ve always loved it. I think because I like scaring people. Yes, I said “scarring”, because it was done to me when I was a little kid. Seeing horror movies, like Toby Hooper’s “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and Wes Craven’s “Last House on the Left”, movies that I was way too young to be watching, have left an indelible mark on my psyche. So much so I’ve grown up wanting to have the same effect on others. I love it! Okay, I’m not serious about scarring peoples psyche but you got to admit that Halloween is so much more fun than other holidays… you get to be someone or something else, scare people and eat lots of candy, you can’t beat that.
Q 08: WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE WITH “TWILIGHT HOTEL”?
A: Well so far, we’ve completed the first volume of the series and on October 13 st it hits the shelves of several comic book stores around the world but what we really want is to have it in “every” comic book store in the world. For that, we are launching a Kickstarter Campaign on the same day. We plan on self-financing the production of the series but printing and shipping cost are expensive, so we are turning to the public to raise awareness so that we can get as much support as possible… so for
everyone who loves horror comics, books, movies… Halloween, then come check out our Kickstarter Campaign at KICKSTARTER! and give us your support. Also, we hope to have the movie version in front of the cameras by 2019.
Q 09: WILL PEOPLE BE ABLE TO GET A COPY OF IT FROM YOUR
A: YES, MOST CERTAINLY!!! Not only are we giving copies of “TWILIGHT HOTEL VOLUME-ONE” to people who back our campaign, we are giving away lots of other stuff. Like tee-shirts signed “limited” artwork by artist Michael Aryn, including his, just finished cover artwork for “TWILIGHT HOTEL VOLUME-2” BED BUGS. Also, we have Kickstarter exclusives, like a very limited “Neon Red Cover” version of Volume-one”, and “copies of the feature film screenplay written by Ra X”.
Q10: ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD?
A: I just want to thank you for taking the time to talk with me about Twilight Hotel and giving it the much appreciated and necessary exposure.
